			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="first-child " style="text-align: justify;"><span title="I" class="cap"><span>I</span></span> have only one other memory of Business School — which was the lecture we got on motivational theory. Out came the Gospel according to Maslow and Hertzberg —seminal works on the subject opining that a man (this was the 1970s — women in business hadn’t really been invented) required more out of his work than just cash.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">In fact the cash bit was usually achieved quite quickly, and a whole bunch of other needs suddenly appeared on the radar screen — including, in no particular order (and probably incomplete because I’m working from memory here): job satisfaction,job enrichment, empowerment, responsibility, somebody to talk and listen to,recognition and so on blablablabla &#8230; Students memorized the key words hygiene factors and hierarchy of needs and whacked them into every conceivable essay in the pursuit of a guaranteed additional five marks. And I’m not just talking about business essays here, I know I inserted them in an essay on wheat farming in Canada and scored well I was, however, unhappy with these ideas — but really too bored too think them through and suggest alternatives. In fact I was more than bored — my ingoing position on their theories (and please remember this flame was fanned by the arrogance of youth) was that I could probably eat a couple of tins of Alphabetti- Spaghetti and shit better ideas on the subject. But I let it rest. I felt they would never be appropriate in business, and they never were. I presumed they’d ended up with Keynes’ Multiplier in some mystic dumpster for guru — thoughts that had passed their shelf life — shortly to be added to by the arrival of trickle — down economic .</p>
