His story was astonishing. In one day, starting at 3.30 am in Fort Lauderdale, armed only with a private plane, they had hit Los Angeles, Montreal, Boston and got back to south Florida. The preceding day involved the same sort of thing, and another one was planned. That preceding day was, itself, preceded by about 1000 such days, and tomorrow was followed by plans for about another 1000. He had about 50–80 live acquisition projects in his briefcase. That’s the way of life when you work closely with Wayne — and we’re not talking about this being an option.

I know many more like this guy, in many other companies — and so do you.Until a couple of years ago that had been my life. Long, long days, endless travel, waking up in strange hotel rooms, checking the language on the bedside phone instructions to remember what country I was in, meetings from breakfast through dinner. Missing our sons grow an inch I would never see again. Always running late, behind on getting back with phone calls and not taking enough time for anybody in my business or personal worlds.

Yup. You’re right. I was paid a ton of cash for this angst, and I guess the guy from Wayne’s world is more than a heartbeat away from welfare. And, yup, you’re right again — both he and I had a choice. If we didn’t like it, we could quit — and I’ll make no bones about it: leaving that crap behind was somewhere in the mix of my decision so to do.
