The whole momentum behind this is demand driven — or, at least that’s what the suits in the boardroom believe. It is an attempt to address one of the core big business paradoxes of our times: when companies desperately need the shrunken, pressurized residue of people that make up its workforce to be enthusiastic and motivated, they continue to treat ‘em like dog poop. This, of course, makes them unenthusiastic and de-motivated.

This paradox takes up a lot of board time — because it’s difficult to find appropriate bones to throw to these dogs to reverse the effect. The basic rules are simple its got to make ‘em feel good but not cost anything — and the company’s Vice President of Tokenism is usually charged to come up with a series of options for the board to discuss. The subject is usually debated after lunch — between proposals for next years Strategic Board Retreat in Rio, and who’s going to draw the short straw and champion the company’s next United Way campaign.guy, this is done with unbridled locker-room enthusiasm which is a technique picked up at a recent interpersonal skills and diversity workshop. He then, of course, proceeds to lead by personal example.
